An Observed Fundamental Plane Relation for Supermassive Black Holes
نویسنده
چکیده
We study observed correlations between supermassive black hole (BHs) and the properties of their host galaxies, and show that the observations define a BH “fundamental plane” (BHFP), of the form MBH ∝ σ3.0±0.3 R0.43±0.19 e or MBH ∝ M 0.54±0.17 ∗ σ 2.2±0.5, analogous to the FP of elliptical galaxies. The BHFP is preferred over a simple relation between MBH and any of σ, M∗, Mdyn, or Re alone at > 3σ (99.9%) significance. The existence of this BHFP has important implications for the formation of supermassive BHs and the masses of the very largest black holes, and immediately resolves several apparent conflicts between the BH masses expected and measured for outliers in both the MBH −σ and MBH − M∗ relations. A SuperMassive Black Hole Fundamental Plane for Ellipticals
We obtain the coefficients of a new fundamental plane for supermassive black holes at the centers of elliptical galaxies, involving measured central black hole mass and photometric parameters which define the light distribution. The galaxies are tightly distributed around this mass fundamental plane, with improvement in the rms residual over those obtained from the MBH − σ and MBH − L relations...
متن کاملA Fundamental Relation Between Supermassive Black Holes and Their Host Galaxies
The masses of supermassive black holes correlate almost perfectly with the velocity dispersions of their host bulges, MBH ∝ σ α, where α ∼ 5. The relation is much tighter than the relation between MBH and bulge luminosity, with a scatter no larger than expected on the basis of measurement errors alone.

Why the fundamental plane of black hole activity is not simply a distance driven artifact Abstract The fundamental plane of black hole activity is a non-linear correlation among radio core luminosity, X-ray luminosity and mass of all accreting black holes, both of stellar mass and supermassive, found by Merloni, Heinz and Di Matteo (2003) and, independently, by Falcke, Körding and Markoff (2004...
متن کاملGalaxies and Black Holes
The idea that supermassive black holes are generic components of galactic nuclei has come to be widely accepted, due largely to the secure detection of 10 6 − 10 9.5 M⊙ dark objects at the centers of about a dozen galaxies. 1 The mean mass of these objects – of order 10 −2.5 times the mass of their host galaxies – is consistent with the mass in black holes needed to produce the observed energy ...
متن کاملThe distribution of supermassive black holes in the nuclei of nearby galaxies
The growth of supermassive black holes by merging and accretion in hierarchical models of galaxy formation is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. A tight linear relation between masses of black holes and masses of bulges arises if the mass accreted by supermassive black holes scales linearly with the mass forming stars and if the redshift evolution of mass accretion tracks closely that...
